Lockdown has been difficult for everyone. Worrying about health, not being able to see friends and family, and being cooped up inside for months is bound to take its toll. But there are also financial implications to consider too.
Not only are many of us earning less than we were, but we’ve also got more time on our hands to spend browsing shopping outlets online. For this reason, it’s time to take back control of the situation and work out how to save money during lockdown.
Quidco Cashback
If you’re shopping online more in lockdown – and let’s be honest, most of us are – then you should definitely be using a cashback service like Quidco (check out my full Quidco guide).
Quidco earn money for referring people to other brands. If you make a purchase, they’ll receive a commission which will be shared with you in the form of cashback. For example, you might receive 5% of the purchase price back, but there are loads of other Quidco cashback deals.
It would be silly not to take advantage of these if you’re going to be spending money anyway.
Guilt free and delicious – the perfect combination.
Yankee Candle Hacks
This is a bit sad, but maybe the one of the things I missed most during lockdown was going to the shops and sniffing candles. No-body ever said I was cool!
If you’re at home most of the day, you’re going to want to keep the place smelling great. Yankee Candles can go a long way to achieving that, but they can cost a hefty amount of cash if you don’t know where to look.
Thankfully, there are ways to get around this. Ordering from Amazon or eBay can bring down the cost, as well as hunting around for low-cost ‘seconds’ if you don’t mind imperfections like your wick being a little off-centre.
Check out my Yankee Candle guide on how not only can you bag one on the cheap, but how you can actually make money them too.
Google Play Discount
If you’re looking to watch tv shows and films, listen to music, or play games on your Android phone then Google Play is the obvious way to go.
However, most people don’t realise that there are ways to massively reduce the cost of this kind of entertainment by taking advantage of Google Play discounts.
There are apps that can help you buy discounted cards, you can find money-saving-deals directly, and can even earn free Google Play credit by completing surveys.
Everything 5 Pounds
Everything 5 Pounds is a great online discount market that stocks brand-named clothes that are no longer being sold directly by the retailer.
That means you can grab clothes at a bargain price of £5 that you would have had to pay much more for a few months ago.
If you’ve never browsed the store before, you’re either going to love me or hate me because I guarantee you end up scouring the site for those hidden bargains.
Check out my Everything 5 Pounds guide that tells you absolutely everything you need to know.

Fortunately, there is no more lockdown, and I hope there is no more need for extreme frugality. However, I, as well as many British folks, had to lose their jobs and work online, becoming independent contractors afterwords. And I liked it so much, that I rejected all the incoming office jobs later. I only had to study useful employment and taxation materials from qualitycontracts.co.uk and it completed the picture of my overall feeling of professional security.
