Avoid a £1,000 fine with the government’s FREE MOT reminder service

Not sure if you realised this or not, but you can be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t have a valid MOT, but the good news is that on the GOV.UK website there is a free MOT reminder service.

What info you’ll need to sign up for the free MOT reminder service

The reminder service is a text or an email sent to you a month before your MOT is up, reminding you that you need to get booked into garage. If you haven’t had it done by then, you’ll get another reminder two weeks before the expiration date.

Before you start, you’re going to need your vehicle’s registration number, your email address or your phone number. That’s it!

Oh and you can unsubscribe from the service whenever you like, and you need to be aware that they won’t automatically stop if you sell your car or declare it off road.

You can unsubscribe by following the instructions in the text message or by clicking the unsubscribe link in the email you’ve been sent.

One thing to take note of is it will cost you a text message to cancel.

Another thing…

Thought it was worth mentioning, that if you do not have a valid MOT, then your motor insurance will be automatically invalid.

This opens you up to a charge of driving without insurance which can add six to eight penalty points to your licence, as well as a fine and your vehicle seized.

ANPR cameras will notify local police cars of non-compliance with tax, MOT or insurance.

I don’t have a car myself because I managed to fail my driving test (drove through a red light – long story – but it was all a bit harsh! ha), but heard it’s really easy to forget your MOT has expired, and it’s risky – so thought I’d let you know about this little tool.
